Description:  So is this a GP40 or a GP38-2? Identified as both in the data base here, it turns out to be neither. Built as a GP40 in January 1966, it was IC/ICG 3032 before coming to UP as 854. It was one of six UP GP40s re-built to GP38M-3s. After the rebuild, it was UP 2531 before going to HLCX.

Title:  Mystery locomotive...solved
Description:  Thanks to Chuck Zeiler for putting me on the right track to finding the lineage of the 2nd unit in this photo. It is indeed an ex-GN GP20 with the high short hood of a long-hood-first configuration. The folks at greatnorthernempire.net confirm that GN GP20 2009 did become BN 2009 - don't have a date on that though - and wore cascade green until being sold to Naparano Iron & Metal on 6/27/1986. So that means there was no road number 2009 on the BN roster at all between June 86 and March 1990 when BN GP20 2037 - formerly CB&Q 901 - was re-built to a GP20C and re-christened #2009. Kinda fun digging all that up.

Description:  I just saw a photo of this unit as IC 5005 (Rick Morgan's album "Illinois") in which it was observed that it needed a bath. Well, it eventually got one as well as new paint - the short-lived orange and black scheme. That livery never really caught on -- kinda like GE locos on the IC/ICG.
