Old Rock Island Geeps never die
Title:  Old Rock Island Geeps never die
Description:  Id forgotten I had shots of this old-timer. Half the roster of the Kaskaskia Regional Port District rail operation, this ex-Rock Island low-nose GP9 use to run 40-car coal trains from the KRPD #2 dock and interchange with GM&O/ICG in New Athens to the power plant in nearby Baldwin. The trains could be no more than 40 cars long as that was the capacity of the siding at the dock. Last I heard, this Geep (now in blue paint) still switches the #2 dock.

Mysterious Mexicans
Title:  Mysterious Mexicans
Description:  First of all, I know nothing about NdeM beyond what Ive just learned through research. But here are a couple of SD40-2s in shiny new NdeM colors that suddenly appeared in a siding on the ex-ICG line just east of Belleville, IL in March of 1988 -- and there they stayed for quite a few days if not weeks. What were they doing there? Near as I have been able to determine, they had just been re-built by EMD and were on their way for delivery south of the border. Why they were left cooling their heels in this spot is one mystery - never resolved - but then there is another. According to centexrails.blogspot.com, these two units were delivered through Texas in December...of 2006! Somebodys dates are off, but Im pretty sure of mine. Then again, could these two have taken 18 years to drift their way south...??

Idle commuter trains
Title:  Idle commuter trains
Description:  A few years ago I was in Australia on business. Had almost no opprtunity to experience the local rail activity. When I finally got free on a Saturday, I went to check out the commuter lines in Newcastle. Figured the traffic would be light on a weekend, but to my disappointment, discovered that the line was shut down completely that weekend for track maintenance! So this photo - more sightseeing than railroad - is pretty much all I got. Mostly, I posted this because I saw there were no shots in the database yet for Newcastle, NSW.

Name that locomotive
Title:  Name that locomotive
Description:  So is this a GP40 or a GP38-2? Identified as both in the data base here, it turns out to be neither. Built as a GP40 in January 1966, it was IC/ICG 3032 before coming to UP as 854. It was one of six UP GP40s re-built to GP38M-3s. After the rebuild, it was UP 2531 before going to HLCX.
